Pictures is the second album, after Raindance from 2019, of the duo ADAM CZERWIŃSKI & DAREK OLESZKIEWICZ, accompanied by guests. This time it's just one instrument - Larry Koonse's guitar.
Born in 1961 in San Diego, the jazz guitarist comes from a musical family. He has been playing guitar since he was seven years old. He studied the game with master Jimmy Wyble, and at the age of fifteen he recorded an album with his father, guitarist Dave Koonse, entitled Dave and Larry Koonse; father and son jazz guitars. In 1984, Larry was the first recipient of a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California.
Pictures is another very enjoyable AC Records album. It is not as refined in sound as Adam Czerwiński's new recordings, especially in terms of resolution and dynamics.
The multiple Grammy Award nominee has played with such celebrities as Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, Bob Mintzer, Peter Erskine, Cleo Laine, Lee Konitz, Larry Goldings, Ray Brown, Rod Stewart, Seth MacFarlane, Linda Ronstadt, Charlie Haden and Warne Marsh. He has appeared on over 300 albums.
The reviewed album belongs to the group of AC Records albums recorded some time ago, although with Adam Czerwiński's publishing house in mind - released in 2009, it had the catalog number AC 002. The material for Pictures was recorded over two days - January 11-12, February 2009 - at No Sound Studios located in Pasadena (California), and NOLAN SHAHEED is responsible for the recording.
As we already said when reviewing the Raindance album, Nolan Andrew Smith, Jr., Nolan Shaheed, in addition to being a famous runner with several records, including the current world record, was a member of Marvin Gaye's touring bands, and lead trumpet in the Count Basie Orchestra. He also played with David Byrne, Freddie Hubbard, Phil Collins, Carole King, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Anita Baker, to name a few - mainly as a session musician. In addition, he is also a sound engineer in the studio he built in Pasadena.
Adam Czerwiński's new release retains everything for which we value his previous albums. That is: consistency, density and naturalness. When the double bass comes on at the beginning of the album, it has something about it that makes it believable and natural. The slightly emphasized contours, resulting from the relatively close positioning of the microphone, are not exaggerated, which gives on the one hand a good impact and on the other hand a soft sound. It sounds similar in the solo fragment in Snowglobe, a work written by Oleszkiewicz.
If someone is looking for an "analog" sound, even though it was a digital signal along the way, they will get it and in a good performance.

Recorded At No Sound Studios
Mixed At Custom34 Studio
Mastered At Abbey Road Studios
Recorded by Nolan Shaheed on February 21-22, 2005 at No Sound Studios in Pasadena, California, USA.
The material was left on the so-called "hundred" in the studio, without overdubs. The recording was made on 24-track analog 2" tape, but Nolan pre-mixed it to eight tracks on an Alesis ADAT digital tape recorder. This is an inexpensive recorder invented by the American company Alesis, using S-VHS tapes, recording a PCM signal in 16 bits with a sampling frequency of 44.1 or 48 kHz; later models had a resolution of 20 bits.
Please note: The new master on 1/4-inch analog tape was taken by Adam to London, where the acetate was cut at Abbey Road Studios on September 23, 2019; the author of the analog master and acetate is SEAN MAGEE, who is the author of most AC Records masters. This is a man who won a Grammy award for the remaster of The Beatles' catalogue. Let us remind you that it uses Shadow Hills Valve Compression compressors.
AC Records Studio is a recording company which values fantastic analogue sound and the highest quality of the releases produced in the studio. AC Records Studio makes music in the best studios using only analogue techniques, with valve and ribbon microphones and valve amplifiers. Audiophile label run by Polish great jazz drummer and producer Adam Czerwiński. Adam founded his label to promote the work of top Polish and foreign jazz artists all lovingly recorded in analog on Telefunken and Studer decks.
