Carmina Burana is a cantata composed in 1935 and 1936 by Carl Orff, based on 24 poems from the medieval collection Carmina Burana.
Its full Latin title is Carmina Burana: Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis.
Carl Orff is one of the few 20th-century composers whose work has defied all attempts at bracketing within the confines of any single movement or trend. An avowedly self-taught composer, he never found himself confronted with a period of creative crisis, nor did he ever feel confined by the dictates of textbook rules. Rather, he would invariably rely on his own vision of a given work. His basic premise - fully corroborated by his compositional legacy - was the belief in rhythm as the primal element, the seminal root of music. This is also the reason underlying the initially unexpected yet lasting popularity of his best-known work, the cantata for solo voices, chorus and orchestra, Carmina Burana (1936), which is being reissued by Supraphon in a newly designed album. Orff discovered the Latin, Old German and Old French texts on which he based himself at the Benediktbeuern (Bura St. Benedicti) monastery in Bavaria. The original manuscripts, dating from the 13th century, were first published in 1847. This live recording of the work, which was made in the mid-1990s, is notable for the top form deployed by the soloists, choruses and orchestra, and is certain to delight the listener looking for music with emphasis on rhythm, and for an original confrontation of tradition and modernity.

Previn's 1975 analogue version, vividly recorded, still leads the available recorded performances of Orff's most popular work. It is strong on humour and rhythmic point. The chorus sings vigorously, the men often using an aptly rough tone, and if there is at times a lack of absolute precision, the resilience of Previn's rhythms, finely sprung, brings out a strain not just of geniality but of real wit. This is a performance which swaggers along and makes you smile. The recording captures the antiphonal effects impressively, better even in the orchestra than in the chorus. Among the soloists, Thomas Allen's contribution is one of the glories of the music making, and in their lesser roles the soprano and tenor are equally stylish. The digital re-mastering is wholly successful. The choral bite is enhanced, yet the recording retains its full amplitude. The background hiss has been minimised and is only really apparent in the quieter vocal solos in the latter part of the work. A triumphant success.
