A record that has inspired generations of musicians. In the summer of 1948 Miles Davis, in collaboration with the arranger Gil Evans, whom he had met several years earlier, decided to carry out his project by detaching himself from the principles of bebop to participate in a new form of jazz. Installed in New York, he founded a new group, intermediate between the big band and small bebop groups.
Cool jazz was born, but it was not an immediate revolution: the nonet was quickly dissolved, and this new music took several years to establish itself among jazz musicians and the public.
On September 18, 1948, the nonet performed for the first time in public, opening for Count Basie's show at the Royal Roost in New York under the title "Nonet by Miles Davis, arrangement by Gerry Mulligan, Gil Evans and John Lewis ". An unusual name which betrays the desire to create music based largely on arrangements.
Birth of the Cool is a compilation album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, released in 1957 on Capitol Records. It compiles eleven songs recorded by Davis's nonet for the label over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950.
Most of the tracks were originally released as 10-inch 78-rpm singles, and then also released in 1954 as both a 10-inch LP - Miles Davis - Classics In Jazz and two 7-inch EPs - Miles Davis - Classics In Jazz Part 1 and Miles Davis - Classics In Jazz Part 2.
Featuring unusual instrumentation and several notable musicians, the music consisted of innovative arrangements strongly inspired by classical music, and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title implies, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz. The majority of the recordings on the record are under three minutes. The album has since been reissued many times. Blue Note recently released a version using the original tapes from Rudy Van Gelder, who produced the album.

Ermitage Distribution is made using as a source exclusively Production Master Tape Archives. Launched in the mid-1980s, Ermitage is an Italy-based independent classical music label and is also a distributor and re-issue music.
Ermitage’s catalogue includes titles from luminaries such as the aforementioned Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, plus Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, Ornette Colman, Sonny Rollins, Billie Holiday, etc.
The label’s first classical music releases were several vinyl records by the legendary Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, which were then followed by many and varied releases on CD with a focus on opera, symphonic and chamber music. But the part that interests us here is Ermitage/Opera Leader Ltd, which is the company’s music distribution and re-issue department. Somehow or other (I’ve yet to find out exactly how – watch this space!), Ermitage’s owner, Gianni Salvioni, managed to negotiate with the relevant labels to acquire the rights to re-release, on 180g vinyl, a raft of seminal jazz albums. This process began in the late 1990s /early 2000s and resulted in Salvioni amassing an enviable archive of production copies and production masters. Most of these tapes are ‘flat’, in other words, unequalised and uncompressed production copies. From there, he produced Ermitage’s various vinyl releases that are already on the market. The tapes were then subsequently placed in his very well-maintained tape archive.
