These unpublished performances were made in concert in Sion, Switzerland during the Tibor Varga Festival of July 16th, 1975 at L’église des Jésuites. It was the first appearance in Switzerland of Valery Klimov, personally invited by Tibor Varga.
This recording captures a remarkable live performance by Valery Klimov and his longtime collaborator, Leonid Blok (1936-2016) , at the 12th Tibor Varga Festival in Sion, Switzerland, on July 16, 1975. The event was organized by Tibor Varga himself, who personally invited the two musicians. While the spotlight often falls on the main performer, it is essential to recognize Blok’s significant contribution to this memorable performance. Due to time constraints, the production had to exclude several minutes of enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Tibor Varga, one of the world’s leading classical musicians, was also deeply interested in recording technology. His festival recordings, known for their superior sound quality, were captured using vintage tube electronics up until the late 1990s. Many of these recordings, made at carefully chosen venues like L’église des Jesuites in Sion, have become prized collector’s LPs. The “Tibor Varga 100th Anniversary TMR-SE 0005” LP has achieved cult status. Thanks to the preservation of the original master tapes, we are now able to release more of these outstanding recordings, providing a rare glimpse into a rich period of classical music history.
