J. S. Bach: Music of the Heavens
Many attempts have been made to combine classical music with jazz. And although these ideas were usually a kind of artistic experiment, many of them permanently entered the canon of 20th century music. The most interesting was the marriage of outstanding jazz musicians who invited classical music virtuosos to their projects (e.g. Stephane Grappelli recorded and gave concerts with Yehudi Menuhin) or were soloists in chamber or symphony orchestras (John Lewis, Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis).
Jazz musicians usually treat these projects as creative enrichments of sound and style. Both Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Bobby McFerrin underwent these experiments. For many jazz creators, combining the sonorism of classical music and jazz orthodoxy has become a stylistic manner (e.g. the work of Jacques Loussier, John Lewis, Charlie Mariano or Hubert Laws). It is quite difficult to explain why the music of Johann Sebastian Bach is often an important inspiration for jazz. This happened in the times of Krzysztof Komeda and his flagship composition "Memory of Bach", Bach's compositions by the Modern Jazz Quartet (the album "Blues on Bach") or the repertoire fascination of the pianist Jacques Loussier, who "played" the compositions of the great creator in various, most often jazz, ways ( from "Bach's Goldberg Variations" to "Reflections Of Bach"). Keith Jarrett was also fascinated by Bach and his interpretation of the famous "Das Wohltemperierte Klavier" is virtuosically delightful.
Bach became interested in the pianist Andrzej Jagodziński, who, together with his own Trio (and after the success of recordings with jazz versions of Fryderyk Chopin's etudes and mazurkas), recorded the sensational album "Bach".
Unlike Chopin's music, in which complex harmonies and beautiful melodies were the basis for improvisation, in Bach's music, Jagodziński and his Trio were inspired by the polyphony and polyphony of compositions and the unlimited possibilities of individual, instrumental inspirations interpenetrating and influencing each other.
The innovative project "Bach - the music of heaven" also refers to the author's, emotionally strongly embedded, reception of Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions.
Jazz reception creates numerous possibilities here and is precisely exposed. Outstanding instrumentalists were invited to the project, who, through their knowledge of J. S. Bach's music, prepared their own short miniatures, which demonstrate not only the power of elegant and universal compositions, but also the creativity and virtuosity of the instrumentalists.
The project was born from the knowledge and musical sensitivity of Wojtek Padjas, the author of the "Music from under the needle" series, which has been carried out on RMF Classic for ten years. The whole arrangement and concept was supervised by an excellent musician and composer, drummer Adam Czerwiński, who invited outstanding artists: violinist Alicja Śmietana, American pianists John Medeski and Yaron Grshowsky, guitarist Marcin Wądołowski, trumpeter Robert Majewski, vibraphonist Dominik Bukowski, bassist Paul Rutschek and pianist Piotr Wyleżoł, leaving himself the luxury of developing the session and playing drums.
The repertoire was subjected to a creative, usually jazz, reception. Interpretations include "standards" by Johann Sebastian Bach: from "Prelludium", "Alamande", "Concerto in A minor", "Air on G string", "Choral" and "Variations/Aria" to "Jesu", "Passion", "Invention", "Saradanda" and the cult "Arioso".
This selection allows the album to appear in a broader, also commercial, aspect. This is not just another "quasi-jazz playing of the classics", but an extremely coherent, precisely prepared and arranged session that fits perfectly into the canon of the most interesting "Bach" projects.
