Stanislaw Skrowaczewski conducts the Kolner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester for this recording of Romeo & Juliet Suites by Prokofiev.

Prokofiev made from the ballet three orchestral suites and a suite for solo piano. Romeo and Juliet. Commemorative coin depicting a scene from the ballet.

Romeo and Juliet represents a giant step forward in Prokofiev’s evolution as a ballet composer, a remarkable synthesis of the "five lines" of his musical personality.

Romeo and Juliet represents a giant step forward in Prokofiev’s evolution as a ballet composer. It is a remarkable synthesis of the five “lines” of his musical personality, as he once described them: classical, modern, toccata (or motor), lyrical, and grotesque. His aggressive “Scythianism” found brilliant expression in the violent hostility between the Montagues and Capulets, and in the brutal darkness of the unenlightened medieval setting. His “classicism” found an outlet in the courtly dances required of an aristocratic setting, such as gavottes and minuets. Entirely appropriate for some of the character roles, such as the Nurse, was Prokofiev’s famous satirical style, while his scherzo style suited volatile characters like Mercutio. And finally, Prokofiev’s lyricism, an increasingly important part of his artistic personality since the late 1920s and now reinforced by the Soviet musical environment (which prized melody and accessibility above all else), was both necessary and particularly successful in conveying the innocent passion between the lovers that lies at the center of the drama. Romeo is Prokofiev’s first completely successful lyrical stage work, and his first convincing portrayal of non-ironic romantic love.

Quick Facts
Composer’s life: Born April 23, 1891, in Sontsovka, Ukraine; died March 5, 1954, in Moscow, Russia
Year completed: Ballet, 1935; Suites 1 and 2, 1936; Suite 3, 1946
First performance: Suite No. 1, Moscow, November 24, 1936
First BSO performance: March 25 and 26, 1938, Sergei Prokofiev conducting (American premiere)

The score of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet calls for 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets (2nd doubling E-flat clarinet), bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 6 horns, 3 trumpets, cornet, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion (glockenspiel, tubular bells, xylophone, triangle, tambourine, cymbals, maracas, wood block, snare drum, bass drum), 2 mandolins, viola d'amore, harp, piano and celesta, and strings (first and second violins, violas, cellos, and double basses). Perhaps to make them easier to perform in concert, Prokofiev made the orchestration in the suites somewhat lighter than in the ballet, with only 2 trumpets rather than 3, 4 horns rather than 6, no mandolins, and a smaller percussion group. This selection of numbers is about 55 minutes long.

All About Ultimate High-Quality CD (UHQCD):

Many years have passed since the birth of the Audio Compact Disc (CD) back in 1982. By use of High-Quality materials and a totally different manufacturing method, the definitive version of audiophile audio CD was born. Playable on any CD player, the Ultimate High Quality CD greatly surpasses all previous CDs before it!

The Ultimate High-Quality CD (UHQCD):

UHQCD NEW CD Format which is a radical change to the CD manufacturing process itself. The conventional wisdom about CD manufacturing, which had remained largely unchanged across the world for over 30 years, has been exhaustively questioned. Through this effort, the ultimate in quality was attained - a level of quality that is certainly impossible to achieve with existing CD discs.

The Ultimate High Quality CD was developed through an effort to improve audio quality by simply upgrading the materials used in ordinary CDs to higher quality materials. For the substrate a high-transparency and high-fluidity polycarbonate (a type of plastic) of the type used for LCD panels was used, while for the reflective layer, low-cost, common aluminium was replaced with a unique and expensive alloy of high-reflectivity.

Differences In Manufacturing Methods:

Conventional CDs are produced using the technique of injection molding to form "pits" of data on polycarbonate material. A metal plate on which "pits" representing audio source data are formed is used as a die. This is called the "stamper." Polycarbonate is melted at high temperatures and poured into the die to duplicate the pit patterns on the stamper. This method is efficient because it enables high-speed production, but it does not enable totally accurate or complete duplication of the pits on the stamper. As a melted plastic, polycarbonate is inevitably viscous, so it cannot penetrate completely into every land and groove of the tiny pits of the stamper.

The Ultimate High-Quality CD photopolymer is used instead of polycarbonate to replicate the pits of the stamper. In their normal state, photopolymers are liquids, but one of their characteristic properties is that they harden when exposed to light of certain wavelengths. The advantage of this property perfect replication of very finely detailed pits was achieved. Photopolymers in the liquid state are able to penetrate into the tiniest corners of pits on the stamper so that the pattern of the pits is reproduced to an extremely high level of accuracy. The Ultimate High-Quality CD reproduces audio with greater precision and at a level that is impossible to achieve using conventional CD production technology!
