This is one of the first live recordings at the nowadays world famous jazz club in Stockholm: "The Pawnshop", with the legendary swing saxophonist Benny Waters, made in 1976! In April 1976 at the age of 74, the legendary swing saxophonist Benny Waters made a momentous appearance at the internationally famous jazz-club Stampen, often known as "The Pawnshop", in Stockholm.
Benny Waters was a jazz saxophonist and clarinetist known in part for the longevity of his career. He began on organ, then switched to clarinet and later added saxophone. The first band he joined in 1918 was Charly Miller's band. In 1922 he attended the New England Conservatory of Music where he gave lessons to Harry Carney. From 1926 till 1931 he joined Charly Johnson's band. Later on he worked with King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson, Claude Hopkins, and others. In these years he made several recordings with King Oliver and Clarence Williams. During 1941-1942 he played with the famous Jimmy Lunceford Orchestra. After that he started his own band and played at the "Red Mill" in New York. After NY he stayed for four years in California. From 1952 to 1992 he lived in Paris and in 1996 received the Legion of Honor by the French Ministry of Culture. He continued to perform regularly up to his 95th birthday.
In April 1976, at the age of 74, the legendary swing saxophonist Benny Waters made a momentous appearance at the internationally famous jazzclub Stampen, often known as “The Pawnshop”, in Stockholm. This tape album is a memento of this concert and a wonderful musician. After studying in the early 20´s Benny Waters went on to teach with a degree of success that can be measured by the fact that two of his pupils were Harry Carney and Johnny Hodges. Benny went on to record with a number of bands including among others Clarence Williams, King Oliver and Charlie Johnson. By the time he moved to Paris in 1952, Benny had in the preceding years been a member of many outstanding bands including Fletcher Henderson, Jimmie Lunceford, Claude Hopkins and Hot Lips Page. Following this he became a freelance soloist for the rest of his career, thus making possible the visits, 13 in all, to Scandinavia and Sweden. Lucky 13 for jazz-lovers!
Worthy of note is the fact that the pianist on this recording is the late, great and unfortunatelythe most “underrecorded” Swedish swing piano player Björn Milder, who was considered by many visiting musicians to be “world class”. And they should know! Includes: Some of these Days, Summertime, Cherokee, Sophisticated Lady, Indiana, Dark Eays, Blues Amore etc.

The shortest and best possible signal-path, without any conversions. The current Opus 3 catalogue contains 50 titles which have been strictly analogue recorded and preserved. To cater to the needs of people for whom only the best is good enough and demand the ultimate in sound perfection we now offer open-reel master copies of Opus 3 albums. All tapes are copied 'by hand', track by track, where all Mastering corrections are made with meticulous calibration and control.
Open 3 Records used a modified Technics RS-1500 for playback of the master tape, which has also been used for all of re-mastering of our older titles. This reel tape album recorder is world renowned as one of the best for playback. However it is specially modified to achieve the best possible quality. Telefunken Magnetophone M-28 for the recording of your copy. This tape recorder has been used for the recording of all of Opus 3's master-recordings since 1978. Opus 3 Records creates an Analogue tape copy, it is always a One to One Copy where, for example, no analogue sub-master is in between, in order to make it as good as possible with no added distortion, noise and wow and flutter, etc.
The drawback is this process takes a lot of time, because all the tracks have to be copies one by one which is the reason the Analogue Tape are high. Because of the way this is done, production is limited to a maximum of 50 pieces. The upside to this process is you are guaranteed to have the best sounding Analogue Tape Copy.
