Thorens TM1600 – High-End-Tape Machine
Thorens as the oldest brand in audio opens a new chapter in history of high quality analogue reproduction with the presentation of the new tape machine TM 1600. Ballfinger in Germany is pleased to present the first result of the cooperation with the oldest and most known turntable brand. As a preliminary design, the Thorens TM 1600 already caused a sensation at the international High End Show Munich in May 2019.
Based on compact model of Ballfinger M002P, tape tension sensors and head assembly closer together, thus adapting the device to the design of the new Thorens sub-chassis turntable TD 1600/1601. Nevertheless, the TM 1600 can be operated with reels with a maximum diameter of up to 28 cm.
The Thorens TM-1600 has two directly driven brushless reel motors and a belt driven capstan shaft. Additional features include a real-time counter, two switchable speeds with 7.5 and 15 IPS and a built-in playback amplifier with switchable equalizer curves CCIR / NAB with studio standard output level of 1.55 V.
Throrens was founded in 1886 and will be the most exiting turntable manufacturer the next years: Gunter Kürten, the new CEO of Thorens since 2018, recognized the enormous potential of this history and had a total of 5 new record players developed in a classic and Thorens-typical design within just two years. Even the legendary TD 124 studio vinyl player will be produced again shortly, which means that an real icon of industrial design of modernity will be revived.
The availability of new tape decks from more than one brand is an important milestone for the reintroduction of analogue magnetic tape technology into the market. With its high profile and strong international distribution network, Thorens is the ideal partner to promote the return of reel to reel.
Thorens TM 1600 reel-to-reel tape machine is a beautifully designed purist analogue playback addition to Thoren's range. Principally designed as a half-track quarter-inch machine accommodating reels up to 10.5" in size at speeds of either 19 cm/s (7.5 in/s) or 38 cm/s (15 in/s).
